The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon

The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is under intensive study since decades as it can be measured and calculated with very high precision, and so it is a sensitive test of the Standard Model. In this talk I follow through the development of the experimental technique and the obtained results. There was a 4$\sigma$ uncertainty difference between measurement and theory until 2001 when lattice QCD calculations changed the estimation of the hadronic vacuum polarisation and gave results close to the experimental average. However, this ab-initio calculaton contradicted to previous theoretical calculations, which were "data-driven", based on hadron production in electron-positron scattering. A recent measurement at VEPP-2000 resolved this problem.
