DESCRIPTION:Speakers: László Szentmiklósi (Centre for Energy Research\,
  Hungarian Academy of Sciences)\n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n\nWelcome to
the website of the 2nd International Conference on Neutron Imaging and Neu
tron Methods in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (NINMACH) 2017\, to be o
rganized in Budapest Hungary\, by the staff of the Budapest Neutron Centre
. The event is organized in cooperation with the International Atomic Ene
 rgy Agency (IAEA).\n\nNINMACH 2013\, organized in Garching\, Germany\, wa
s the first event of this conference series that addressed both neutron s
cientists and archaeologists and conservators.\n\nIn the recent years\, mo
dern scientific methods have led to a wealth of information in Archaeology
and Cultural Heritage Research concerning the composition of artefacts bo
th on a molecular level and on the mechanical built of objects that canno
t be dismantled without destroying them. X-ray methods from radiography to
fluorescence have become widespread\, but the potential of neutron method
s has barely been tapped.\n\nNeutrons easily penetrate thick layers of met
als\, even lead\, while revealing organic material like wood\, leather or
bones in sealed metal or stone containers. Two- and three-dimensional imag
ing provides visual information\, while neutron activation analysis delive
rs elemental composition information\, and neutron scattering reveals allo
ys and textures.\n\nWith modern detectors\, Neutron Imaging can even be pe
rformed at low-power research reactors\; the application for cultural heri
tage research gives rise to new uses to elder small research reactors thro
ughout the world\, which is explicitly supported by IAEA.\n\nNINMACH addre
sses archaeologists and conservators from museums and universities and aim
s to illustrate the potential of neutron methods in cultural heritage rese
arch.\n\nTalks and posters will be presented by physicists and archaeologi
sts who have already employed neutron methods successfully\; attendance is
explicitly recommended for scientists who are completely new to neutron m
ethods and want to learn about the possibilities at neutron sources throug
 hout the world.\n\nhttps://indico.wigner.hu/event/518/
