Description
Analytical study of the radiation of a planar undulator with a constant magnetic constituent, superimposed on its periodic undulator field, is performed with the help of generalized special functions. The exact analytical solutions for undulator radiation (UR) intensity allow investigating influence of the constant magnetic component and of inhomogeneous losses in the beam on the shape of the spectral lines of UR harmonics. Analytical formulation of the effect of the constant magnetic field enables to obtain exact expressions for its critical magnitude, which may produce significant changes in the UR characteristics. We compare contributions of homogeneous and inhomogeneous effects in long undulators to the broadening of emission lines of the main and of higher harmonics and explore influence of the undulator’s parameters and field strength on it’s performance. The results are discussed in the context of the undulator’s application for free electron lasers (FEL). Recommendations on how to maintain good quality emission in undulators, profitable for FEL, are proposed.
