Description

Here we report an extended study for the creation of smart porous nanomaterials, including all three porosity regimes (micro-meso and macro porosity) via 3 distinct (and tunable) templating strategies. The idea is to synthesize a novel multi-modal porous scaffold with high surface areas where the hierarchical porosity would provide a vascular and open network of porosity. To achieve this we use the ice-templating technique and a combination of a hard and a soft template. Waste carbons could replace the role of the soft template, which is usually a cheap carbon source (e.g. sucrose, glycose, etc.). Synthesis and characterization of hierarchical porous carbons with different hard colloidal silica templates of specific shape and fixed size used in different ratios and combinations aiming to achieve controlled mesoporosity and optimal specific surface area. Our aim is the optimization of the mesoporosity for the preparation of smart porous materials with tailored properties and structures that can be used as high-performance templates for various sustainable applications.
