Description
The methods of nonequilibrium thermodynamics allow the proper handling of local specific gravitational energy of a self-gravitating fluid. The hydrodynamic framework allows various models to be integrated, for example the Ohanian form of gravitational energy density, which is thermodynamically distinguished. The resulting field equations also allow a thermodynamic coupling to exist, which results in a modified Poisson's equation. This result is investigated in relation to astrophysical phenomena, such as galactic rotation curves, which are usually attributed to dark matter instead.
