The core focus of this research is to create a common language where stakeholders of different backgrounds and experience have access to the same data and the ability to explore that data, so they can more fully understand the context and consequences of decisions being made.

Room: Mátyás Hall (Groundfloor) In this talk I will give an overview of the computational steps in the analysis of a single cell-based high-content screen. First, I will present a novel microscopic image correction method designed to eliminate vignetting and uneven background effects which, left uncorrected, corrupt intensity-based measurements. I will discuss methods capable of identifying cellular phenotypes based on features extracted from the image using deep learning and other advanced machine learning algorithms. For cases where discrete cell-based decisions are not suitable, we propose a method to use multi-parametric regression to analyze continuous biological phenomena. Finally single cell selection and isolation methods using machine learning will be discussed.

Encouragingly, despite the hype, it also seems that some progress is being made with completing the circuit from arcane research topics to real world applications, at least for larger organisations geared up to better absorb any risks involved. However, what is not so clear is whether this is translating into widespread uptake within day-to-day running of smaller commercial ventures. Our work at the Hartree Centre, within the Science and Technology Facilities Council, is a key component of a long-term vision of the UK government about promoting the adoption of this technology at all levels of UK industry. This talk will describe our experiences as we add AI, Data Science and Big Data to our established reputation as one of Europe's premier industry facing centres for High Performance Computing; particular focus will be given to our efforts to ensure we reach all levels of the commercial world, from the largest to the smallest players, and the likely benefits to all.

The first requirement mostly concerns software architectures and efficient algorithms. The second one also imposes nontrivial theoretical restrictions on the modeling methods: In the data stream model, older data is no longer available to revise earlier suboptimal modeling decisions as the fresh data arrives. In my presentation, I will provide an overview of distributed software architectures and libraries as well as machine learning models for online learning. I will highlight the most important ideas for classification, regression, recommendation, and unsupervised modeling from streaming data, and we show how they are implemented in various distributed data stream processing systems. I will also explore the usability of online machine learning, especially for recommender systems and industrial IoT applications.

The key idea is that data is never transferred to a central location, instead, machine learning models are trained locally and then aggregated centrally. Our research aims at reducing the burden on the central cloud component by using local communication on the Edge. Devices exchange information with each other and perform the aggregation step among themselves in a decentralized manner. Apart from the decentralized learning algorithm, we introduce additional techniques to reduce communication such as subsampling and compression. We demonstrate that our approach is comparable to the centralized version in terms of convergence speed as a function of the amount of information exchanged.

Room: Mátyás Hall (Groundfloor) Dimensioning and validating large-scale highly-available computing and communication systems necessitate extensive benchmarking campaigns, which generate vast amounts of measurement data. Moreover, models derived from the evaluations of these campaigns should be scalable and portable in the sense that derived conclusions have to be applicable in a variety of deployment configurations of different size. Identification of outliers which indicate workload induced failures is a core objective of this evaluation process. In operation time, the limited controllability of the external workload needs prevention of performability failures by integrating monitoring logic and, upon necessity, allocation of further resources for proper processing of the increased amount of input.. By its very nature, the problem is the identification of a hybrid workload-performability model. Its first step is the classification of the different operation domains to distinguish between normal, overloaded, etc. states. The next step is to synthetize of a qualitative system control model targeting the mitigation of overload problems. The presented approach presented relies on visual exploratory analysis of sample data, resulting in a set of hypotheses for the qualitative model. Subsequently, the model is validated by confirmatory analysis carried out with the help of hybrid checking automata over the entire large dataset. If the model turns to be valid, the checking automata form the basis for monitoring and run-time verification, thus facilitating run-time resource control as a byproduct of the benchmark evaluation process.

[modAL][1] is a new active learning framework for Python, designed with modularity, flexibility and extensibility in mind. The key components of any workflow are the machine learning algorithm you choose and the query strategy you apply to request labels for the most informative instances. With [modAL][2], instead of choosing from a small set of built-in components, you have the freedom to seamlessly integrate scikit-learn or Keras models into your algorithm and easily tailor your custom query strategies, allowing the rapid development of active learning workflows with nearly complete freedom. modAL is fully open source and [hosted on GitHub][3]. The operational characteristic of these often high complexity processes is nicely represented by the generated temporal events. However, extracting useful knowledge from these large datasets and the process of model building using the extracted knowledge is by no means an easy task. Therefore, in our presentation, we would like to highlight and emphasize the application possibilities of some often neglected approaches for the analysis of large temporal event datasets. We present challenging problems of different fields of interest including process safety and churn analysis and present how the toolbox of data and process mining and predictive modeling can be utilised following the integrated information concept of Industry 4.0. In our presentation, first, the multi-temporal sequence-based representation of the event series is described and statistical metrics (frequency, probability, confidence, etc.) for the characterization of the datasets are introduced. Based on the presented simple statistical metrics, we present a Bayesian model for the prediction of the next occurring event in our process. Realizing the complexity of the event sequences, the applicability of advanced machine learning techniques like deep learning is investigated for the detection of the root cause of past events and the prediction of future sequences. The problem of root cause detection is formulated as a classification problem assuming a known set of root causes in our process, while the task of sequence prediction is formulated as a sequence to sequence (seq2seq) learning problem. In addition to the description of a recurrent neural network model of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) units for the solution of the above-mentioned tasks, we present how the multivariate data analysis techniques can be applied to extract knowledge from recurrent neural network models. Finally, we present how the task of churn analysis and sequence mining is connected and how the topic of event (sequence) analysis facilitates the prediction of customer churn. The applicability of the aforementioned tools is presented through the analysis of various industry-motivated problems like alarm management and customer churn prediction. The alarm management is the effective handling of industrial process alarms, where the extraction of useful knowledge from historical process data is a high-priority problem, while the problem of churn analysis is present in quality test sequence optimization, or in the prediction of customers who are likely to discontinue the use of a service. The tools for the analysis of the various datasets were implemented in Matlab/Python, while the deep learning neural networks were trained by Tensorflow/Keras. Therefore, in our presentation, we intend to share our application experiences regarding these interfaces.

However, tools for close collaboration with human intelligence has not been included yet. The first commercial computer (D-Wave) does not resemble the ideal quantum computer physicists and mathematicians dreamed of for decades. The most dramatic difference between a Turing type machine and the new architecture is that it not based on logical steps. While for the quantum physics and mathematics community this state is unsatisfactory and they are still pursuing an ideal quantum logic architecture. In my talk, I argue that the new architecture is here to stay and quantum software will adapt to the new technologically. Artificial Intelligence applications are one of the best-suited problems for the new quantum architecture. In the emerging quantum era, we have to change our concepts on what a computer is.

The previous 5-6 years have basically changed both the basic research paradigm and the level of success in this research area as well. Continuous vector space models, neural networks, deep learning: these are some of the main terms widely used today in most data-intensive fields including linguistic research. With the new paradigm, however, new questions have arisen. One of them concerns with the possibilities of mapping the new categories (vectors, dimensions, layers, etc.) onto linguistic concepts. Besides this, the presentation deals with questions like ‘how and why is it possible that rather simple word embedding models are able to grasp real-world relations without any other knowledge sources but pure texts’?

Room: Mátyás Hall (Groundfloor) Since about 1950, reknown researchers have claimed from time-to-time that artificial intelligence (AI) will reach human intelligence in about 10 years. It hasn't happened. On the other hand, the evolution of computational power is exponential and the exponent of Moore's Law is large. Churchland's question -- is the brain more complex than clever? -- is still here. What are we missing? I argue that AI applications have found the solution, AI algorithms and AI architectures have reached the level of the mammalian brain and are about to surpass us. This is due to knowledge collected by mankind, the crowdsourcing efforts for training deep networks, the huge variety of deep learning architectures, and finally, the need to avoid the cost of crowdsourcing. I will give a pragmatic definition for creativity and intelligence being served to what I believe the crux of the innovation of the mammalian brain versus other neural systems, show a very recent architecture that can serve the purpose as well as a demonstrative example on extending it towards goal oriented systems.

Continuous hyper-surfaces can be constructed for the full 3+1D data that enclose certain spacetime regions. Here, we demonstrate that such hypersurfaces may be viewed as 3D velocity vector fields, which explicitly characterize dynamically evolving 3D shapes contained in 4D. In particular, we consider the processing of a contrast fluid from tomographic reconstruction of a beating human heart.

Room: Mátyás Hall (Groundfloor) The fast development of diffusion MRI techniques made possible the mapping of the connections of the human brain on a macroscopic level: the graph consist several hundred, anatomically identified vertices, corresponding to 1-1.5 cm^2 areas of the gray matter (called Regions of Interests, ROIs), and two such vertices are connected by an edge if axonal fiber tracts are discovered between them. We have examined the resulting graphs in numerous viewpoints, and mapped the individual variabilities, the sex differences, the conservative edges, and the axonal development of the human brain in these studies. We will concentrate on the phenomenon of the Consensus Connectome Dynamics in our talk, and will explore the consequences of this surprising phenomenon.

Room: Mátyás Hall (Groundfloor) Most common diseases are polygenic; therefore, multiple even hundreds of genes out of the overall 23,000 can be responsible for a disease. The simultaneous appearance of diseases, comorbidities, like amongst neurological disorders are expected to have a common genetic background, which can be explored using network-based approaches. Novel network-based workflows for genetic studies provide a powerful approach to investigate shared genetic factors, allowing the combination of various sources about genes and genetic networks. We aimed to explore and identify the common genetic background of neurological comorbidities using different levels of results of the network-based analysis: at variant, gene and gene set based levels. To identify gene sets, we either used pathway databases or disease associated gene lists. To analyze the data alongside network-based techniques, we also used an approach based on regression. Polygenic risk score method uses the strength and probability of multiple gene-disease associations to create scores for each individual and given diseases. Using these techniques, we were able to explore and create novel disease networks based on their inferred shared genetic background.

Room: Mátyás Hall (Groundfloor) For automotive companies, continuous improvement of the manufacturing process is a must in order to achieve optimal product quality and cost. The traditional approach for this improvement process is Model Based Engineering, where hypotheses, and cause-effect chains are discovered purely by considering the laws of physics. At Robert Bosch, engineers and data scientists are working on a concept which utilizes data mining methods to create hypothesis of failure causes (grey-box modeling). In this presentation, we present the general approach of combination of data analytics and classical engineering and demonstrate the feasibility of the concept by a pilot big data project about a plastic encapsulation process optimization. In order to provide timely data for a wide range of reporting and predictive tasks, at the Robert Bosch Engineering Center, a cluster running the Apache Hadoop stack was set up as storage and analysis infrastructure for the excessive amount of production data. Data pipelines were developed in order to enable storing different data sources in the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) from the Manufacturing Execution System (MES), the main data source. Among other sources, sensor data of molding press tool were used for modeling, in order to discover the most probable failure cause for the primary defect phenomenon, called delamination. Algorithms of modeling, feature importance measures and physical meaning of major important factors are also presented.

However, the "black-box" or at most grey-box nature of the technology prohibits its use in many critical applications necessitating a throughgoing justification for the correctness of the results delivered. One rapidly evolving approach is xAI (eXplainable AI) targeting the simultaneous delivery of a result and arguments for its integrity. An alternative solution is to reuse the rich repertoire of measures collected in the field of fault-tolerant computing. One of the core problems addressed here is to build high-assurance solutions out of not entirely reliable services by using fault-detecting wrappers and redundancy scheme. The presentation gives an overview of the synergy of AI and FT measures with an outlook to the integration of future xAI based solutions.

Room: Mátyás Hall (Groundfloor) Probabilistic graphical models are successfully applied in many challenging problems of artificial intelligence and machine learning: in data and knowledge fusion, in causal inference, in trustworthy decision support systems or explanation generation. First, I summarize that their wide applicability stems from their transparent, multifaceted semantics. Second, I show that the same property makes them an ideal representation for federated and privacy-preserving extensions in these areas. I demonstrate the applicability of probabilistic graphical models in exploring dependency models in large-scale health datasets.

Room: Mátyás Hall (Groundfloor) Software testing makes up a significant part of software development processes. This is especially true in the case of a complex IT system like IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). Our case study describes machine learning and visual analytics approaches to support a non-functional performance test, the endurance test. This test checks whether the software can continuously work without performance degradation. The analysis of data generated by such tests is a challenge itself due to their high complexity and contextual nature. An additional problem can be that often only a fraction of the data is annotated. Our approach includes different one-class classification models providing inputs for visualizations. We have also studied the problem of the interpretability of results in case of failed tests and tried to trace what may have gone wrong on the basis of information gained from the models.
