Description

This work studies the characteristic gluing problem in asymptotically flat spacetimes. In particular, it investigates the conditions under which initial data on different null hypersurfaces can be glued together to form a solution of the Einstein equations. The main focus is on the obstructions to such a gluing construction and their interpretation in terms of conserved quantities. Within the Bondi–Sachs formalism, two families of radially conserved charges are derived from the null constraint equations and identified as gauge-invariant gluing obstructions. Their relations to ADM and BMS charges are investigated, and further gauge-dependent obstructions are discussed.
