Description

Recently, several rings were discovered around various minor planets and asteroids. The origin and history of these rings are not well understood yet. We specifically focus on the ring of the dwarf planet Haumea and its perturbed nature. In this project, we are using numerical simulations with a modified version of the REBOUND N-body code to study the dynamical effects occurring in this system. Moreover, we make analytical predictions for the minimum ring width around Haumea, Chariklo, Quaoar, and Chiron. We also aim to construct local simulations of the ring, analogously to the standard shearing sheet model, to study kinetic properties. In this presentation, I will introduce several dynamical features of Haumea’s ring and discuss how the standard local simulations of planetary rings break down in this example.
